Looking Back: Haus of Horrors 2021

BY LILY ROBERTS

Spooky, spirited, and stylish: if you weren’t at this year’s scary season club night, you definitely missed out! Haus of Horrors was FUZE’s big Halloween bash held at Lakota on Thursday 28th October, and it certainly delivered. Following huge success in 2020 when the event featured in the Guardian’s ‘Where to get spooked this Halloween in the UK’, the Haus returned with a bang, and this time without the restrictions of COVID-19. It was the perfect way to kick off the Halloween weekend and get us all in the spooky spirit, with a selection of talented performers and an impressive setlist.

Of course, the amazing costumes were the main event! Lakota was aglow with creativity and character with a wide range of impressive outfits, including Megamind, a bride and a nun, there was even an appearance from the Spice Girls! Outfits ranged from spooky to hilarious; we saw some classic Halloween favourites, like the corpse bride and Michael Myers etc., as well as some more out-of-the-box outfits and references to pop culture, such as Arrested Development and Scooby Doo. A personal favourite was one of the winning groups dressed as underwater creatures - our very own ELA director, Ru, went above and beyond with their anglerfish light! The makeup was especially impressive; bold eye looks and intricate SFX wounds were staples among the crowd.

Nine best dressed tickets were given out throughout the night: some to individuals, some to duos and some to groups. Winners were awarded for intricate makeup, wild costumes and statement looks. Check out our Instagram and Facebook for pictures of some of the incredible outfits. For a winning costume, you would have received prizes including jaeger, bucket hats, shot glasses, and FUZE merch - what more could you want?!

As well as all the incredible costumes, we were lucky to enjoy such a range of musicians throughout the night. Appearances were made by Oyemen, Jakobin, Oppidan, Brown Excellence, Mazara, and That Guy, providing a refreshing mixture of garage, hip-hop, and Bollywood. There was something for everyone; the music and performers perfectly set the tone for the night, keeping the floor busy until closing.

While the night was fun-filled and focused on embracing the Halloween spirit, FUZE’s inclusivity mission really shone through. A strong effort was made by the team to take an active approach in safety. There was a medical tent on site and the ELA team ran a wellbeing area throughout the night for anyone who felt they needed a break. Amidst all the excitement, FUZE maintained their core values through and through. This is something to be expected from every FUZE event, making them accessible to all.

It’s safe to say that Haus of Horrors 2021 was a great success and ensured this year’s list of exciting FUZE events kicked off with a bang. We hope to see you at the next one!
